The sublime aesthetics of the Taj Mahal, popularly termed as the Taj, is beyond the literal explanation. A vacation to the Taj Mahal is a combination of historic, artistic, educational, and romantic experiences. Situated on the bank of the River Yamuna, the Taj was honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. The institution cited the monument as “the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage.”
The Taj Mahal is in the city of Agra in the western part of the Indian state Uttar Pradesh. The earliest mention of Agra as ‘Agravana’ (meaning paradise in Sanskrit) comes from the epic Mahabharata. However, it was ‘Ptolemy’, the famous second century A.D. geographer, who referred it with its modern name Agra. The Modern Agra was founded by Sikandar Lodi, ruler of Lodi dynasty in 16th century. However, the credit to make Agra the capital of architectural heritage goes to the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.
